如果你在澳大利亚,点一杯长黑咖啡(Long Black)。在美国的某些州,点的时候要叫“意式咖啡”(Italiano)。但在世界的大多数地方,这款咖啡被称为“美式咖啡”(Americano),而美式咖啡是世界上最热门的咖啡,热门程度仅次于意式浓缩(Espresso)。

If you’re in Australia, you would order a Long Black. In some parts of the United States, you may order an Italiano. Most everywhere else in the world it’s an Americano, and it’s perhaps the most popular way that coffee is enjoyed, second only to espresso.

名字被简单的称作“美式咖啡”,然而有趣的是它不是美国人发明的,却是为美国人而发明的。

The name simply means ‘American’ however it wasn’t created in America. It was actually created for Americans.

据“野史”考据,在二战期间,在欧洲驻扎的美国步兵,特别是在意大利,厚重的意式浓缩黑咖对于他们而言实在是太强力。所以他们添加热水用以稀释,并仿照在美国的喝法一样用滴漏咖啡。

According to the popular history, U.S. infantrymen stationed in Europe, specifically in Italy during the Second World War, couldn’t quite handle the strength of the thick, black espresso. They added hot water to dilute the flavour and emulate the drip coffee they were used to drinking back home.

所以意大利人为美国军人提供这种稀释的咖啡,在简单称之为“美式咖啡“(Americano)之前,被称为 “美国风味(American-style)”或“美国咖啡(American Coffee)” 又或者 “咖啡美式(Caffè Americano)”

Italians serving coffee to American GIs would refer to this diluted espresso as ‘American-style’ or ‘American Coffee’ – Caffè Americano – before simply shortening it to Americano.

怎么制作美式咖啡呢?其实非常简单,把同比量的意式浓缩放进热水中。当然,加多少水取决于你的个人习惯和口味。是不是非常简单呢?其实咖啡历史跟咖啡一样,都是简单易懂却精彩呢。

To make one, pour a shot of espresso into an equal amount of hot water. Use as much or as little water as you like, and find the ratio that you like best. Making coffee history can be as simple as that.
